Why the air from your vents may not be moving like it should
Weak airflow can make rooms uncomfortable even when your HVAC system is running. The problem may be as simple as a clogged filter or blocked vent, but duct problems, blower issues, or a restricted evaporator coil can also reduce the amount of air reaching your home.
5 Common Causes of Weak HVAC Airflow

1 Dirty or clogged air filter A heavily loaded filter can restrict the amount of air moving through the HVAC system.
What’s happening?
Your indoor blower pulls return air through the air filter before sending that air across the evaporator coil and into the supply ductwork. As the filter collects dust and debris, resistance to airflow increases.
Why can this reduce airflow?
If the filter becomes heavily clogged, the blower may not be able to move the normal volume of air through the system. That can cause weak airflow at the vents, reduce comfort, increase system strain, and in severe cases contribute to evaporator-coil freezing.
Inspect the air filter and replace it if it is visibly dirty or heavily loaded. Use the correct filter size and a filter type appropriate for your HVAC system, and make sure the airflow arrow is pointing in the proper direction.
2 Closed, blocked, or obstructed vents and returns Air cannot move freely when supply registers or return grilles are closed or blocked.
What’s happening?
Supply registers deliver conditioned air into your rooms, while return grilles allow air to travel back to the HVAC system. Both sides of that airflow path need to remain reasonably open and unobstructed.
Why can this reduce airflow?
Furniture, curtains, boxes, or other objects can interfere with airflow at a register or return. Closed registers can also restrict the intended airflow path and may increase pressure in the duct system rather than improving efficiency.
Make sure supply registers are open and not covered by furniture or other objects. Check return grilles as well and keep the area in front of them clear so air can move back to the HVAC system.
3 Duct leakage, damage, or restriction Air can be lost or restricted before it ever reaches the room.
What’s happening?
Your duct system carries conditioned air from the indoor equipment to each supply register. A disconnected duct, significant leak, crushed or kinked flexible duct, or other restriction can reduce the amount of air delivered to one or more rooms.
Why can this reduce airflow?
A supply-duct leak allows conditioned air to escape before it reaches the register. A crushed or sharply kinked duct reduces the available pathway for air to move through. Problems on the return side can also affect the amount of air reaching the HVAC equipment.
If any ductwork is safely visible and easily accessible, look for obvious disconnected, crushed, or damaged sections. Most duct problems require professional airflow and duct-leakage testing, especially when the ductwork is hidden in an attic, wall, or ceiling.
4 Blower or indoor fan problem The blower is responsible for moving air through the duct system and into your rooms.
What’s happening?
Inside the air handler or furnace, the blower assembly creates the airflow that moves conditioned air throughout your home. If the blower cannot operate at the airflow the system requires, airflow at the registers may become noticeably weaker.
Why can this reduce airflow?
Possible problems can include a dirty blower wheel, a failing blower motor, an electrical or control problem, or an incorrect blower-speed setup. The exact components involved depend on the type of equipment installed in the home.
If airflow is weak throughout the home even after checking the filter and vents, or if you hear unusual blower noises, schedule professional service. Do not open the equipment cabinet or attempt electrical or motor repairs yourself.
5 Dirty or frozen evaporator coil A restricted indoor coil can interfere with both airflow and heat transfer.
What’s happening?
Air from the blower passes across the evaporator coil before entering the supply ductwork. Dirt buildup on the coil can restrict that airflow. The coil can also become covered in ice when operating conditions cause its temperature to fall too low.
Why can this reduce airflow?
As dirt or ice blocks more of the coil surface, it becomes harder for air to pass through. A frozen coil can eventually reduce airflow dramatically. Coil freezing can be related to restricted airflow, blower problems, a dirty coil, or refrigerant-related problems such as a leak.
If you see ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines, turn the cooling system OFF and contact an HVAC professional. Do not chip, scrape, or attempt to remove the ice with tools.
