If air is coming from your vents but it feels warm or room temperature, the indoor blower may be running while the cooling side of the system is not doing its job. Some causes are simple settings or airflow problems, while others require professional diagnosis.
5 Common Reasons Your AC May Be Blowing Warm Air

1 Thermostat or fan setting The system may be circulating air without actually running a cooling cycle.
What’s happening?
Your thermostat controls when the cooling system and indoor blower operate. If the thermostat is set to HEAT instead of COOL, the air conditioner will not be asked to cool the home. If the fan is set to ON, the blower can continue running even when the cooling equipment is between cycles.
Why can this cause warm air?
During those periods, the blower is simply moving indoor air through the duct system without the evaporator coil actively cooling it. That air may feel warm or room temperature even though air is still coming from the vents.
Set the thermostat to COOL, set the temperature below the current indoor temperature, and set the fan to AUTO. If the system still does not begin producing cool air, continue with the next checks.
2 Dirty air filter or restricted airflow A heavily clogged filter can reduce airflow and interfere with the cooling process.
What’s happening?
The indoor blower must move enough air across the evaporator coil for the air conditioner to absorb heat properly. A filter loaded with dust and debris can restrict that airflow.
Why can this cause warm air?
Reduced airflow lowers cooling performance and can cause the evaporator coil to become excessively cold. In more severe cases, moisture on the coil can freeze, further restricting airflow and eventually leaving the system unable to deliver properly cooled air.
Inspect the air filter and replace it if it is visibly dirty or heavily loaded. Use the correct filter size and install it in the proper airflow direction.
3 Outdoor unit is not cooling properly The indoor blower can run even when the outdoor cooling equipment is not operating correctly.
What’s happening?
In a typical split air-conditioning system, the outdoor unit contains the condenser fan and compressor. These components help circulate refrigerant through the system and release the heat removed from your home.
Why can this cause warm air?
If the outdoor unit loses power or a component such as a capacitor, contactor, condenser-fan motor, or compressor-related component fails, the indoor blower may continue circulating air while the refrigeration cycle is not operating normally. The result can be warm or unconditioned air from the vents.
From a safe distance, check whether the outdoor unit appears to be operating and make sure leaves, grass, or vegetation are not blocking airflow around it. Do not open the electrical cabinet or touch internal components.
4 Frozen evaporator coil Ice on the indoor coil can prevent the system from absorbing heat and delivering cool air.
What’s happening?
The evaporator coil normally becomes cold enough to absorb heat from the air passing across it, but it should not be covered in ice. Restricted airflow, a dirty coil, blower problems, or low refrigerant can allow the coil temperature to fall far enough for condensation to freeze.
Why can this cause warm air?
As ice builds on the coil, airflow and heat transfer become increasingly restricted. Cooling performance can fall dramatically, and the air reaching the vents may eventually feel warm or barely cool.
If you see ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines, switch the cooling system OFF. Do not chip or scrape the ice. Contact an HVAC professional to determine why the coil froze.
5 Low refrigerant or a refrigerant leak Insufficient refrigerant prevents the system from moving heat effectively.
What’s happening?
Refrigerant circulates through a sealed HVAC system and carries heat from the indoor evaporator coil to the outdoor condenser. The system should not normally consume refrigerant during operation.
Why can this cause warm air?
If refrigerant charge becomes too low, commonly because of a leak, the evaporator cannot absorb heat properly and the system loses cooling capacity. Low refrigerant can also contribute to evaporator-coil freezing.
Refrigerant problems require professional diagnosis. A technician should determine why the charge is low, repair a leak when applicable, and restore the correct refrigerant charge rather than simply adding refrigerant without addressing the underlying problem.
